Vitamin B2 Riboflavin

Besides the well-known B-Complex mix of B vitamins, individual vitamins can also be purchased as solo supplements. Why is this good? The well-known set of B vitamins is a suitable dietary supplement if you have an overall deficiency of vitamins in the body. However, if you are dealing with a specific problem, it is sometimes more appropriate to reach for the exact type of vitamin you need to supplement. So why is vitamin B2 needed?

Vitamin B2 - riboflavin is involved in the metabolic conversion of nutrients and obtaining energy for cells. We need it especially in stressful situations. It is also important for good skin condition, eyes, proper heart function, and other organs. It is important for red blood cells, regulation of human growth, and reproduction.

It is not sensitive to heat but cannot withstand light, especially ultraviolet. Its consumption increases mainly in stressful situations. The daily consumption of vitamin B2 is 1-1.3mg. The tolerated upper intake limit is up to 60mg per day. It increases during growth, pregnancy, and increased thyroid activity. Riboflavin deficiency can also manifest in gallbladder disease, diabetes, and the use of oral contraceptives. Smokers and people consuming alcohol in increased amounts also have higher consumption.

Vitamin B2 deficiency manifests as painful inflammation of the corners of the mouth, oral mucosa disorders, or damage (dystrophy) of nails. It is water-soluble and excreted from the body through urine and sweat, so the risk of overdosing on this vitamin is almost zero.

Adequate intake of riboflavin is ensured by a regular varied diet. It is found in increased amounts in yeast, milk, fish, and meat. Be careful with pasteurized milk, the longer-lasting the milk, the less B2 it contains. B2 is also found in the liver, yeast, kidneys, cottage cheese, and nuts.

Who is the use of standalone vitamin B2 - riboflavin suitable for? People suffering from frequent fatigue and low energy levels. People suffering from skin disorders and especially oral mucosa. Athletes and active people who need additional energy. Anyone who needs to increase support for the nervous system and overall mental well-being.

Long-term vitamin B2 deficiency can cause anemia - a reduction in the number of red blood cells. Cataracts can also occur if riboflavin is lacking in the body for a long time. Its deficiency also causes migraine states, and in severe all-day migraines, the Canadian Headache Society recommends taking up to 400mg of riboflavin per day - but this is considered extreme.

Overdosing on vitamin B2 is not a threat, the body can get rid of it by flushing it out in urine and sweating. Reasonable daily doses range from 10-20mg in a capsule - let's not forget that when taking vitamin supplements, we cannot always utilize 100% of the administered substance. It remains only to choose a reputable provider of vitamin supplements and take them in reasonable amounts.

B3 - example that food is medicine

Niacin was long considered a mere part of the diet until it was discovered that its deficiency causes skin, digestive, and mental problems known as pellagra. Doctor Goldberger proved that the cause of this disease is not an infection but a one-sided diet without vitamin B3. He conducted an experiment on himself and his colleagues, who consumed exclusively poor diets and began to show symptoms of pellagra. However, when they added nutrients rich in niacin to their diet, the symptoms disappeared. In 1937, niacin was isolated from the liver, confirming its importance and nutritional value.
